I remember Instagram before you had to have an account; when it was just a fun app to play with filters.
That was my first experience with it. When they switched to requiring an account, I deleted it. I ended up re-downloading it to share work on a few projects here and there as requested while on location... but didn't have Photoshop with me while on location and so ended up taking photos of my camera's LCD...
I didn't really give it a true fair try again until the fall of 2015.
I'd say I've made decent progress on it.

Followers

Followers seems like the biggest and easy milestone to track... but I've also enjoyed watching individual likes on photos.
In addition, 100s of followers doesn't mean much if they're a bunch of ghost followers that don't like or look at your work.
So... a few milestones on likes...

The Squirrel photo being the first to break 170 likes is interesting.
Not only did the squirrel break the string of 5 the previous record-holders all being birds which hold 12 ranks at 50-160... but it was also posted before the Road Runner, meaning it hit 140 - 160 likes after the Road Runner and somehow managed to catch up and beat the Road Runner to 170.
What a sneaky little rodent :)

The Roadrunner was able to catch up. While it was beaten to 170, it took 180 and 190.
The next two slots both went to insects. A beautiful black swallowtail, and a little honeybee.
Best Nine

You can see several of the images in the best nine as milestones from above, but there are a few in there that aren't. The best nine is the images form that year that have the most likes... but they may not be the first ones to hit those numbers as I've shown in the milestones above.
I didn't expect to see the little yellow warbler and the carolina anole (2016, bottom row). Both of these images had a bit of motion blur, the warbler's wings as its about to take flight, and the anole's dewlap (bright pink throat flap). I thought the motion blur on these items was interesting, and apparently other people did too :) just not quite enough apparently to break milestones, although the warbler did eventually surpass the squirrel which broke milestones.

It isn't fair really to compare 2015 to 2016. I didn't really start taking it seriously until the fall of 2015. 2016 to 2017 will be a fairer comparison... but we have a while to wait...
